VICTIM RESOURCES
Identity theft can be a difficult crime for a victim. Your life has been altered. You are faced with tasks that may be confusing and situations you don’t know how to handle. All too quickly, you will find that in identity theft cases the burden of proving innocence rests on the shoulders of the victim.
The Identity Theft Resource Center continues to create information to assist you. Our information will clarify the steps needed in various situations of identity theft. In fact, you may find that you will reference several of the ITRC “solutions” and/or “fact sheets”. These are updated regularly. When new types of identity theft crimes are reported, new material is written to assist victims.
In some cases, you will not be able to work on clearing your name as fast as you'd like. Companies move slowly, partly to protect you. Most imposters are never found, let alone arrested or convicted. This is often not the fault of law enforcement, but rather the nature of the crime. So, work with the police while you work on clearing your good name. Restoring your identity can be done as long as you follow the right steps.
If you find yourself frustrated or overwhelmed, our staff is here to help you, at no cost. You may contact our offices, via telephone or email, for direct victim assistance. While we are not attorneys or psychologists, we have worked with thousands of identity theft victims and know how to guide you through the process of recovering your identity.
Finally, dealing with identity theft sometimes becomes a roller coaster ride of emotions. On those tough days, be kind to yourself. And remember: You are not alone. ITRC is here to help.
